Muharram 1449 AH

The first month, and one of the four sacred months. The Hijri year opens with it, and its tenth day is Ashura.

Begins on Sunday 6 June 2027 and runs 29 days, to Sunday 4 July 2027.

Projected from the Umm al-Qura calendar, as ActivePray reckons it. A Hijri month truly begins when the new crescent is seen, so it can open a day either side of this. Like every day of the Hijri year, each day begins at sunset the evening before.

Its holy days

As each branch keeps them, from ActivePray’s calendars.

  1. Sunday 6 June 2027 · Shia

    Islamic New Year

The first of Muharram. The month opens the mourning of Karbala, so the new year is entered quietly rather than kept as a feast.

  2. Sunday 6 June 2027 · Sunni

    Islamic New Year

The first of Muharram — the start of the Hijri year, marking the Prophet's migration to Medina.

  3. Monday 14 June 2027 · Shia

    Tasuʿa

The ninth of Muharram — the eve of Ashura, when the camp of Husayn was surrounded and the water cut off.

  4. Tuesday 15 June 2027 · Shia

    Ashura

The martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala. A day of mourning, majalis, and the Ziyarat of Ashura — not a day of fasting: the greater part of the jurists hold a fast on it disliked, and many forbid it. It is customary to abstain from food and drink until the afternoon in grief, then to break it.

  5. Tuesday 15 June 2027 · Sunni

    Day of Ashura

The tenth of Muharram — a recommended fast, kept with the ninth (Tasuʿa) so the day is distinguished.

The White Days

Three days of recommended fasting each lunar month, the Ayyām al-Bīḍ, when the moon is full. In Muharram 1449: Friday 18 June 2027, Saturday 19 June 2027 and Sunday 20 June 2027.

In ActivePray, the Hijri date stands at the top of every day, with each prayer at its hour and the holy days and fasts of the year, in Sunni and in Twelver Shia practice.
