Judaism

Three movements and one Hebrew year. Each keeps its own services, its own festival days and its own way of beginning the month.

Prayers
Tefillat Boker at first light and Tefillat Erev at sunset, worked out from the sun where you are.
Calendar
Months begin with the new crescent seen from the Land of Israel, and the year with the ripening barley, the aviv. Dates are projected, then confirmed when a sighting is reported.
Days of rest
Shabbat and the Torah’s holy convocations. They never cost your streak, and no reminder sounds inside them.
Scripture
The whole Tanakh, Torah, Prophets and Writings, in Hebrew and English, with Tehillim.
Before prayer
The washing of hands and feet, after the priestly washing in Exodus 30:19.
Prayers
Shacharit at sunrise, Mincha in the early afternoon and Ma’ariv at nightfall, with Musaf on Shabbat and festivals.
Calendar
The Hebrew year: Rosh Chodesh, the festivals and the fasts, with a second day of Yom Tov outside the Land.
Days of rest
Shabbat and Yom Tov. They never cost your streak, and no reminder sounds from the sunset that opens them until nightfall.
Scripture
The weekly Torah portion with its Haftarah, the whole Tanakh, Tehillim, and blessings for waking, meals and more.
Before prayer
The washing of the hands, with its blessing, al netilat yadayim.
Your choices
The Imahot in the Amidah, one or two days of Yom Tov, and an annual or triennial Torah cycle.
Prayers
Shacharit, Mincha and Ma’ariv at the same hours, with the Matriarchs always in the Amidah.
Calendar
The Hebrew year, with one day of each festival wherever you are.
Scripture
The weekly Torah portion with its Haftarah, the whole Tanakh, Tehillim, and blessings for waking, meals and more.
Before prayer
A washing of the hands, simply and unhurriedly, and setting your intention, your kavanah.
Your choices
An annual or triennial Torah cycle, and whether Shabbat and Yom Tov are kept as days of rest.

Christianity

Three churches and three calendars. Each keeps its own hours of prayer, its own feasts and its own fasts.

Prayers
Morning Prayers, the Hours, Vespers and the Prayers before Sleep, each with its Greek name. Vespers begins the liturgical day at sunset; the others are at hours you set.
Calendar
The Great Feasts and the fasting seasons, with Pascha, on the New or the Old Calendar.
Scripture
The Bible in the Orthodox canon, 76 books with the Anagignoskomena, the Psalter of 151 psalms, and prayers for meals, illness and grief.
Before prayer
Standing before the icons, facing east, with the sign of the cross, and forgiving whoever is owed it.
Your choices
The New or the Old Calendar, and the hours of the morning prayers, the Hours and the prayers before sleep.
Prayers
The Liturgy of the Hours, each with its Latin name: the Office of Readings, Morning, Daytime, Evening and Night Prayer, at hours you choose. The Regina Caeli in Eastertide.
Calendar
The Roman calendar: its seasons, its solemnities and feasts, and the colour of the day.
Scripture
The Bible in the Catholic canon, 73 books, the Rosary with its four sets of mysteries, and prayers for meals, illness and grief.
Before prayer
The sign of the cross, with holy water if you keep it by the door, a moment in God’s presence, and an examination of conscience.
Your choices
All five hours, or Morning and Evening Prayer, the two hinges of the day, with Night Prayer; and the hour of each.
Prayers
The Daily Office: Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer, Evening Prayer and Compline, or a single quiet time, at hours you choose.

Islam

One Qibla and two schools. Each keeps its own prayer times and its own holy days.

Prayers
Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha at their five times, worked out from the sun where you are.
Calendar
The Hijri year, with Ramadan, the two Eids, the White Days and Mawlid an-Nabi, following the Umm al-Qura calendar.
Scripture
The Holy Qur’an, all 114 surahs, duas by theme, a tasbih to count your dhikr, and a guide to the rak‘ahs.
Before prayer
Wudu, step by step, and the Qibla toward the Kaaba.
Your choices
Standard or Hanafi Asr, and the convention for Fajr and Isha: Muslim World League, ISNA, Egyptian, Umm al-Qura, Karachi or Tehran.
Prayers
Fajr, then Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha, in three sittings, or each at its own time. The times follow the Ja’fari reckoning.
Calendar
The days of the Ahl al-Bayt: Muharram and Ashura, Eid al-Ghadir, and Milad an-Nabi on the seventeenth of Rabi‘ al-Awwal.
Scripture
The Holy Qur’an, all 114 surahs, duas by theme, and the Tasbih al-Zahra.
